چکیده

We present a method for the determination of orientation-dependent mobilities Ceff(u) based upon analyses of the detachment-limited coarsening/decay kinetics of equilibrium-shaped two-dimensional islands. An exact analytical expression relating the orientation-dependence of Ceff(u) to that of the anisotropic step energies b(u) is derived. This provides relative values of Ceff(u) to within an orientation-independent scale factor that is proportional to the decay rate of the island area. Using in situ high temperature (T =1550–1700 K) low-energy electron microscopy measurements of two-dimensional TiN island coarsening/decay kinetics on TiN(111) terraces for which b(u) values are known [Phys. Rev. B 67 (2003) 35409], we demonstrate the applicability of our analytic formulation for the determination of absolute Ceff(u) values. D 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Size-dependent detachment-limited decay kinetics of two-dimensional TiN islands on TiN(111).

In situ high-temperature (T(a)=1050-1250 K) scanning tunneling microscopy was used to determine the coarsening and decay kinetics of two-dimensional TiN adatom and vacancy islands on atomically smooth TiN(111) terraces. We report the first observation of an abrupt decrease in decay rates, irrespective of T(a), of adatom islands with areas less than a critical value of 1600 A(2). However, no dec...

Absolute orientation-dependent TiN(001) step energies from two-dimensional equilibrium island shape and coarsening measurements on epitaxial TiN(001) layers

In situ high-temperature (1030–1223 K) scanning tunneling microscopy was used to determine the equilibrium shapes of two-dimensional TiN vacancy islands on atomically smooth terraces of epitaxial TiN(0 0 1) layers. Inverse Legendre transformations of the equilibrium island shapes yield relative step energies as a function of step orientation within an orientation-independent scale factor k, the...

Low - energy electron microscopy studies of interlayer mass transport kinetics on TiN ( 1 1 1 )

In situ low-energy electron microscopy was used to study interlayer mass transport kinetics during annealing of three-dimensional (3D) TiN(1 1 1) mounds, consisting of stacked 2D islands, at temperatures T between 1550 and 1700 K. At each T , the islands decay at a constant rate, irrespective of their initial position in the mounds, indicating that mass is not conserved locally. From temperatur...

Absolute TiN(111) step energies from analysis of anisotropic island shape fluctuations.

In situ high-temperature (1165-1248 K) scanning tunneling microscopy was used to measure fluctuations around the equilibrium shape of two-dimensional vacancy islands on TiN(111) terraces. From the equilibrium shape, the ratio of the two <110> step energies was found to be 0.72 +/- 0.02. Combining this with the results of an exact approach for analysis of shape fluctuations, applicable to highly...

Enhanced self-diffusion on Cu(111) by trace amounts of s: chemical-reaction-limited kinetics.

We find that less than 0.01 monolayer of S can enhance surface self-diffusion on Cu(111) by several orders of magnitude. The measured dependence of two-dimensional island decay rates on S coverage (theta(S)) is consistent with the proposal that Cu3S3 clusters are responsible for the enhancement. Unexpectedly, the decay and ripening are diffusion limited with very low and very high theta(S) but ...
